Paper.io 2 is a territory-grab game played on a flat arena shared with a crowd of rival squares. You start with a small patch of colour. Step off it and you leave a trail behind you; steer back onto your own land and everything the trail enclosed becomes yours. The score is the share of the map you own, and the whole game is deciding how far you dare to wander for the next bite.

This site is mostly a horror shelf, so this is the palate cleanser. Where Granny Horror is slow, tense and built around holding your breath, a round of Paper.io 2 is bright, relaxed and over in a few minutes. How to play

You are always moving, so you only ever steer. Use the arrow keys, or WASD if you prefer, to turn left or right. There is no jump and no shoot button in this one, whatever generic control notes say. Click inside the game once so it receives the keys.

While you are on your own colour you are safe. The moment you leave it, your trail is exposed. If another player runs into that trail, you are out. If you run into your own trail, you are also out. Head back to your territory and close the loop to claim the area you outlined. You can also eat into a rival's land the same way, and cutting their trail removes them from the round.

Tips

• Take short, shallow trips. Several small bites that return quickly are safer than one huge loop that leaves a long trail for others to hit.
• Watch the edges of the screen for other players before you leave your territory. Most deaths come from a rival you did not see approaching.
• Hug the border of your own land when expanding along it, so the trail stays short and you are never far from safety.
• Do not turn back on yourself too tightly while drawing a loop; a sharp reversal near your own trail is an easy way to lose a run.
