You are a night guard at a failing pizza restaurant, sitting in a tiny office with a desk fan, a flickering monitor and a limited supply of electricity. The animatronic mascots wander the building after midnight, and your only job is to still be alive at 6 AM. There is no weapon and no way to fight back. Everything in Five Nights at Freddy's comes down to information and resource management.
The 2014 original by Scott Cawthon is slower and more tense than most horror games. Nothing chases you across a map; you watch a camera feed, see an animatronic in a different spot than last time, and work out how long you have. For anyone who came here for Granny Horror, it is the opposite pace: less running and hiding, more sitting still and getting your nerve tested.
How to play
The whole game uses the mouse. Move the cursor to the left or right edge of the screen to turn your head. On each side of the office there is a door and a hall light. Click the LIGHT button to check whether someone is standing in the doorway, and click DOOR to shut it. Hover over the bottom of the screen to raise the camera monitor and switch between rooms.
Every door closed, every light on and every minute with the monitor up drains the same power meter. If it hits zero, the lights and doors die and the night is nearly over for you. Each night runs from 12 AM to 6 AM in a few minutes of real time, and it gets harder as the nights go up. Beat the fifth night to see the ending.
Tips
- Doors cost power, so use them only when needed. Check the light first; if the doorway is empty, leave the door open.
- Bonnie comes down the left side and Chica down the right. When one vanishes from the stage camera, expect a visit at the matching door soon.
- Keep an eye on Pirate Cove. Foxy stays behind his curtain and gets more active the longer you ignore him. If he starts running down the west hall, shut the left door quickly.
- Do not live on the cameras. Look, note where everyone is, and drop the monitor. Freddy in particular moves when you are not looking at him, so keep checks short.
- On the first night the phone message explains the basics; let it play and use the quiet time to learn the button placement.
